As I embarked on the second KDP-Select experiment I had a very different feeling compared to last time -this time I had some expectation and in turn nervousness and a very different mind-set. I’m not sure having expectation is always a good thing!

Compared to my first 2-day experiment, which ran over a weekend, ‘part 2’ began on a Friday (a working day) so it was going to be interesting to see what impact this had amongst other factors. Well, day 1’s total downloads were 738, which is fantastic. In comparison to the weekend days it was, perhaps unsurprisingly, lower than last time.

But - and hopefully this an important but - it still ended up at #9 in the Amazon UK Thrillers list (for free downloads) and #48 in the overall list after 24 hours, which is amazing, and hopefully will give THE CODEX FILE, initial prominence as the weekend unfolds. This in itself will be interesting to keep an eye as well as comparing the overall value of the ‘free promo’ to last time.

One odd observation though, which was true last time, is the stark difference between UK and US downloads, which favours the UK by 4:1 - I haven’t quite figured out why as the promotion is not particularly biased to the UK. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues, and whether I can figure out why!

The KDP-Select experiment 2 - here we go again! THE CODEX FILE is FREE - 13-15 April

Well, here we go again. Just over a month ago I embarked on my first KDP-Select ‘free promo’ experiment via Amazon - the odd idea of ‘giving your book away’ for a few days in the hope that added exposure would improve actual sales afterwards.

The first two-day trial resulted in an amazing 3,355 Kindle downloads - much more than I dared hope for. In terms of sales, I published THE CODEX FILE in early January with the ‘free promo’ roughly two and half-months later when my novel was listed on Amazon. The number of sales in the last month since the promo have been eleven-fold compared to before it, with the largest rise in the two weeks after the promo finished.

OK, so my sales are not on the scale of J.K. Rowling or Dan Brown quite yet! Nor have they (unsurprisingly) matched the number of free downloads, but it’s a positive step in the right direction for which I’m very grateful!

So, it’s time to now embark on the second promo that the KDP-Select programme lets me use in a three month period (i.e. upto five free days) - and this time it’s going to run for 3 days.

From 13-15 April you can get THE CODEX FILE, a Kindle bestseller in the thriller genre, for FREE!

How will this promo compare to the last? Will it do as well, or was last time a lucky blip? Will there be the same buzz second time around?

Whatever the outcome, hopefully it won’t be dull, and I’ll be reporting back as the promo unfolds!

When fact mirrors fiction, life mimics art, or another cliche! Did THE CODEX FILE predict the future?

So the government has announced plans to monitor internet and mobile technology usage (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17576745) and everyone’s in uproar about it.

And rightly so.

But come on, really, is this actually surprising, or news? Does anyone think that this hasn’t been happening anyway when situations demand that extra bit of intel that nosing into your browsing or email history will provide?

It’s positive that civil liberty groups, and even fellow Conservative MPs, are scrutinising some of the principles in this new proposed legislation. But let’s face it, this sort of “surveillance” of the online world is coming whether we like it or not - whether it’s in this parliament or a future one.

The only question that remains on this subject is how will it get used? The government and intelligence services will have their views, but if you want a vision of the future of the internet where online surveillance takes a much more sinister direction, then you need to read THE CODEX FILE - if you dare!

I’d never really considered myself as a ‘prophet’ predicting the future, but it’s nice to have been proved right in this respect. But on a serious point, I just hope that a new potential “surveillance culture” doesn’t go down the route in my book, as trust me…you really don’t want the internet as your enemy!

THE CODEX FILE verdict on the KDP-Select experiment

So, my big KDP-Select two-day ‘get THE CODEX FILE for free’ experiment ended this morning, and can best be described as 48 hours of madness! I must be honest, despite careful preparation and planning lots of Tweets, sharing links, Facebook updates, and Blog updates, I did have my doubts about whether any of this would really make a difference. After all, there are so many amazing books and authors all competing for your attention! Would mine really stand out?

To end up then as #1 in the Thrillers list on Amazon for the last 9 hours of the promo period was just extraordinary then, and just so beyond what I’d hoped for - and also #7 in the overall Kindle chart! I can now legitimately use the word ‘best-seller’ in future promotional tweets and posts!!

So, what were the final scores:

Total: 3,353

Unbelievable! As I said before, I think in retrospect I’d have been thrilled with a few hundred!

So the questions now seem to be this.

Will everyone who downloaded my novel read it?
Will they all post a review?
And will they all like it?

The answer’s probably no on all counts. But even if a fraction of this number do, that would make it worthwhile, and I’d be very grateful.

Further, will this this experiment improve ‘paid for’ sales? Well that remains to be seen, but then I didn’t write the book for the money - sounds altruistic I know, but it’s true, and possibly a small bonus. The point is 3,353 people now have access to reading THE CODEX FILE, and hopefully spreading the word! It was a very exciting 48 hours!

So, was it worth it? For me, absolutely!
